Switching Pantheons for Workings

If I am not resonating with a deity on my chosen path when I am doing a particular working whether spell, potion or charm, I am not going to risk the outcome having ill effects because I needed a deity’s help and that deity is the only one from my path that has “power ” over what I am doing. No!!!!! Why in the name of all that is good would I risk it when 1) I am an eclectic and 2) there are a ton of deities that I could invoke with proper respect and blessing and offering.

Yes, I identify myself with the Celtic path because I have always been drawn to it but I won’t force myself to follow a strict following to that path.

Usually, when the deities associated with my path aren’t resonating with me I seek out a deity from my first path, the Hellenic pantheon. My workings always turn out.

Remember magick is all about the intent not following a strict wording from a book or spell kit. Yes, those come in handy when you don’t know how to do it yourself but if it doesn’t feel right down to you very essence you will doubt it and obscure it.

You have a Matron and Patron yet you have more Pantheistic beliefs.

Well, yea…

I see the divinity of God/Goddess as not necessarily as a single being or even two or more being above us. I see the divinity all around us. I see the divine as something we can connect to with meditation and study of ourselves and the world around us. Yea, I am definitely kind of a pantheist.

I don’t see deity as a big man or woman or even both telling me how to live my life and expecting reverence and respect. Yet I do see deity as a helpful representation of the universe around you.

Cernunnos and Brighid are the masculine and feminine aspect of everything there is on earth and in the universe in my eyes. Some pagans wouldn’t agree with me, but hey it is my path.

I’ve always said that if I wasn’t pagan I’d probably be an atheist just because so much of religion revolves around the belief of a deity above us. I see deity as an end to a means for us mere humans to understand this vast world because let’s face it who knows what exactly created us ( as in the universe as a whole and what in all get out started life). See, no one has the exact answer, so to me pledging my life to a deity and saying that you are the benevolent true one, is silly.

I know many pagans dedicate their lives to a deity but I was brought into paganism with the belief that it varied amongst people, groups, and covens how they saw deity. PERFECT  for me. So when I say I have dedicated my life, my matron, and patron, I don’t mean I have dedicated myself to an entity I have never met.  I mean that I have dedicated my life to protecting the earth and the universe to the best of my abilities and all the creatures that call the earth home whether human animal or non-human animal.  I mean, I believe in some higher power but I am not the type of person that would just dedicate my life to some nameless thing that I don’t really know anything about. My brain doesn’t agree with that.

Is Your BOS your Bible?

Short answer: NO!

What is a Book of Shadows (BOS) “a personal diary or journal filled with the spells, rituals, charts, dreams, and notes of information about witchcraft that are important to the owner? This is where a witch records their own personal impressions and thoughts”

My Book of shadows is not a book I live my life by. I think of it as I do my notebook for school ( I’m just a lot more protective of it).  I take notes in it for later reference in my craft and training, but there is a lot more I do with it. A BOS can be used for many things and many people use their BOS to collect all kinds of general information and information specific to there paths. So what are some examples things that you will find in a BOS:

  • General information about paganism.
  • Specific information about your path.
  • List of gods and goddesses and what they represent, as well as what represents them.
  • Little summaries of books you have read while learning and notes that you have on them.
  • Information about witchcraft and your reflection on it and how you plan to use it in your path if you do want to practice.
  • Spells (Personally I have a section dedicated to how to write/ make my own spells ATM. I haven’t really been writing spells down bc I usually just let my magic flow.)
  • I have dream information in mine.
  • I have examples of how rituals and Sabbaths should be done, but I don’t use them. (They were just tools that helped me learn and since one day I will start a Grimoire  I just keep them.)
  • Information on herbs and gardening ( I’m a kitchen/hearth/hedge witch so for me, it makes sense maybe not for you though.)
  • Information on Colors, stones and other things that help us learn about and focus energy frequencies.
  • Definitely have something in there about altar tools and placements.
  • I have meditation, chakra and aura information in mine too.

* If there is interest I can link my online version of my BOS  that is just a collection of data.

Ok so Online BOS. How does that even work? Aren’t you suppose to take that into your circle when you perform the ritual and stuff? So you take your laptop?

Well, it depends. Usually, I have my ritual or spell together and I usually don’t need notes, but when it is really complicated  I have notes.

Currently, I am transferring things into a binder. Just print it off and arranging it as I see fit. You can tell I’m OCD when it comes to thing like this because I’ll make 3 or 4 sometimes more drafts before I make a final copy. I plan on one day having a faux leather bound  BOS but that can be 20 years away before I feel ready to do that or it could be next week that I decide everything is the way I want it to be.

Just to be clear there is nothing wrong with having a laptop in a circle. I mean if you are going to get distracted by Facebook then don’t use tech to hold your BOS otherwise who cares. We are in the age of technology so if you think it benefits your path to use it then go for it.

You may have heard of a Book Called A Wiccan Bible.  So I have found 2 versions. One that is set up like Scripture, but it is not our bible it’s just something that someone wrote. I have a copy of it because I find it interesting. The Other is pretty much a textbook to teach you things you need to know. Neither is a literal bible though.

When their taboos are YOUR NORMAL

I sometimes feel like I am alone even when surrounded by people, even family, and friends that I know care for me. But how can I not feel that way I they are constantly judging everything about me?

I’ve been told quite often “Stop trying to be so different.” Or “Why can’t you be normal” or “It’s like you like to get a rise out of people.”

The problem is is that I’m not trying to be different, I’m not trying to get a rise out of people, I’m not trying to be obstinate. To me, I am being normal. ( And this is without us going into the whole what defines a normal thing, at least at this point it does)

To me, normal is

  • being nature-based and Pagan
  • being a witch.
  • wearing my pentagram.
  • constantly questioning if what I am being told is the truth
  • being polyamorous,
  • being LGBT
  • believing that all people deserve to have the benefits allotted by the government for married people regardless of race, orientation or number
  • not falling for the “truth” that a piece of paper I have to get from the courthouse makes a person married.  It is instead a spiritual (not religious) connection and a vow to stay faithful (in the terms defined by the parties evolved) makes a marriage
  • not believing that following parts of a book are the only ways to live your life.
  • that knowing that I still have morals and values without being a Christian or the bible.
  • believing that women shouldn’t be raped just because their skirt was to short in your opinion, because girls who are fully  dressed covered still get raped
  • having the knowledge that no girl is a slut or whore just because she wears “revealing” “short” “skimpy” provocative” or “tight” clothing
  • believing that everyone deserves love but not everyone deserves your respect
  • believing that we are on earth to learn lessons so, therefore, are reincarnated into different being to experience life  from that perspective.
  • attachment parenting
  • extended breastfeeding
  • loving your body and being proud of it
  • being a vegetarian/ vegan if you feel it is right.
  • liking lots of cuddly behavior.
  • respecting social welfare and not exploiting it
  • knowing that there is a problem with society and not being afraid to voice concern.

I mean I can go on but I won’t burden you with all that.

See some of the things on my list are things that you would think people wouldn’t have a problem with, yet for some reason they are controversial and people have problems with them. They can sit and talk about celebrity gossip but when you get down to real issues whether social, moral or spiritual people clam up. They get scared and want to run and label you as abnormal. They forget everyone is different even if some opinions are the same for the “majority” of interest.

But to all my freakish, abnormal, hard to live with friends. Don’t let it scare you away from being YOUR NORMAL because being true to yourself is so much more important than crushing your inner core values to fit in.

Values of a Witch

Ok, I get this all the time. You are pagan, you don’t believe in the bible. Then what are your values, what are your morals? Do you even have them?

Of course, I do. In case you didn’t realize this, you don’t need religion to know good from bad.

Ok, I have said before that I am a mix of deity and nature-based, but the fact that I have a matron or patron does not mean that because of them I have a moral compass. I try to live my life by the balance I see in nature, by what I see every day. For instance, you know how we pollute every day and it hurts the earth? Bad action = bad consequence.

Recently the Jehovah’s Witnesses came by my house. They know my family ( they are JW, which you know if you follow this blog), so they are kind of confused as to why I left the “truth” and Since I am open to the discussion, they show up every once in a while.

When they were here the last time they asked me about sin. Follow the dialogue.

“Do you believe in the concept of sin and that Christ died for our sins.”

“I don’t believe in sin, I just believe that people choose to do bad things and they have to learn to deal with the consequences that that action will leave on there lives morally and according to mankind’s law.  As for Christ dying for our sins. I believe that he existed as a man who believes greatly in a faith that he was taught and was ready to be a needed sacrifice. I believe he thought he was dying for people sins, but I don’t believe that myself.”

“So  you don’t believe in the bible or Christ, yet you feel you make moral decisions.”

“I don’t feel that I need a book to tell me what is right or wrong. I feel that whatever created us gave us the ability to make a decision that benefits ourselves and others without hurting people unnecessarily. I don’t understand the concept of people believing that without a written document you have no values, no morals. We were given the freedom to choose our actions. I choose to try to do things that don’t hurt people or that are “bad” because they are easiest for me. People decide for themselves what is the easiest path for them, some choose things that are bad, some choose well. Who are we to judge anyway?”

This lead to a discussion on why I don’t believe in the Bible, etc. I get this same reaction all the time. People don’t get it.  But I don’t mind discussing things with them. I even took a copy of one of the more recent brochures that the faithful and discreet slave help to have published at Bethel called “The Bible”. Haven’t read it yet but I’ll get there.

Back on topic.

I have my Values and I’m going to share some of them, but first what are values. Well in this case,”Moral values are the standards of good and evil, which govern an individual’s behavior and choices. Individual’s morals may derive from society and government, religion, or self.”

Mine is completely based on self because in the religion I grew up in some of those values were taught against. So what are my “values” or just general things that I feel are common sense? So here we go:

  • Rights of love, life, happiness not being infringed on if they aren’t hurting others.

Some May know that I have a blog about poly/plyg relationships. I don’t find anything wrong with consenting adults participating in these. But apparently its morally wrong. Why? Still, haven’t found a valid reason why.

I believe that all people should be able to love who they want no matter of sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, creed, number. I mean if it’s not your relationship and no one is being hurt who cares

  • Make the world a better place.
  • Do no harm. I knew this before I understood the bible or knew what the Wiccan Rede was. Honestly, I feel this is common sense. Do you even need the Rede for this?
  • Be honest
  • Do everything in the spirit of love
  • Stick up for what is right. Have integrity.
  • Be Trustworthy
  • Be self-controlled- I still Struggle with this
  • Be  compassionate
  • Have self-respect
  • Do not discriminate
  • Strive to be the best you can be and don’t give up
  • Respect others
  • Forgive. This has always been hard for me but I’m Still working on it all the time
  • Cooperate
  • Have fidelity
  • Be a good friend
  • Be tolerant
  • Have self-respect
  • Be open-minded
  • Speak your truth

Really these all sound so generic. But think about it. Do you really need something to tell you to treat others how you want to be treated? It’s a thing. And If you do something bad and have to reap the repercussion most likely you’ll learn.

I don’t really see my self as religious but I am definitely spiritual. I want to be in balance with myself and balance with the universe. Because of that, I strive to not make others feel beneath me (though I know I fall short at times), I strive to treat others as my equal because it is a matter of circumstance that I have it as good as I have. I mean don’t take things for granted. You never know what could happen next to take everything away from you.

Personally, I feel that the goal for my journey during this life is to help others find their potential. I meet so many people who take to heart when others say they aren’t worth anything and won’t amount to anything, but they have the potential to great and they shouldn’t let it go to waste. I found this truth after sitting down once and trying to explain to someone what my values and morals were and how I live my life and honestly, when I’m on track I am at my happiness. Its at times like that that I know I am doing right and that I am on the right path.
